Brainerd, Minnesota Cemetery Research Resource

As a genealogist from Minnesota, I take great pride in the many resources our state has in place to aide researchers! Many, like the death index, are very well known, but many many others are not.
So I've decided to spotlight a few of the lesser known greats here, in hopes that I can connect someone with a tool that can use! Since Saturdays are good days to do genealogy (at least for us working folks), I decided to post these links then.
Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota
Evergreen Cemetery  (older)  &
Memorial Gardens Cemetery (newer)
This is a great website! Not only is it loaded with various information and great local links, they have their entire burial records collection ON-LINE! Yes... all of them!

If you have family from the area and are still searching for burial locations... check out the website. And even if you don't think you have anyone buried there, you should still check out the site, it really is well put together.
Thanks for reading... and stop back next week!

  1. Hi Nicholas:
I learned about your blog via Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.
Reading it, it struck me that the Weerts surname sounds very Dutch. Being Dutch myself, I was very much interested. I also have a blog with many genealogical subjects. One of my posts shows a survey of foreign genealogical blogs/sites showing Dutch origin surnames. The URL is http://www.patmcast.blogspot.com/2012/05/dutch-ancestors.html. The idea is to try and establish contacts between people who have an interest in the same surname. There are numerous cases in The Netherlands where people emigrated centuries ago without leaving a trace in Dutch archives. With my blog I try to bring Dutch and foreign (mainly US/CAN) genealogists together.
Therefore, I like to have your permission to show your site in my a.m. blog.
I look forward to your reaction!
    Kind regards,
    Peter
PS A quick check revealed over 6000 Weerts hits in the Dutch National Archives.

  2. Hi Peter!
Thanks for your note. My Weerts ancestors came from Petkum, Ostfriesland, Germany--- which is quite near the Dutch border. My Grandfather always said that originally it was VanWeerts, or some variation of that. Though I have not found that to be the case at least through 1800. My Great-Grandfather talked of playing along the "dikes" as a child and wore wooden shoes... They came to the US in 1892.
Yes, of course, link to me in anyway you'd like! I appreciate it. I've just this last week been looking into DNA testing, just for fun.
    Cheers!
    Nick

    1. Hi Nick!
Thanks for your quick reaction and ok. I added your site to the list. If you want me to change or add anything, please let me know.
I had another look at the National Archives. There are some 370 Weerts records in the province of Groningen. Groningen is adjacent to Ost-Friesland. So you never know.
Thanks for following my blog, I'll keep an eye on yours as well :)
      Have a nice weekend!
      Peter
